She was the GrandMother of the Gay Power movement and the Mother of the Trans Rights Movement in the United States alongside with her partner in activism Sylvia Rivera. Her and fellow trans kinfolk were on the frontlines of the Stonewall Rebellion, many have cited that they started the Stonewall Rebellion by protesting the Police. She alongside Sylvia Rivera founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) the first social justice organization in the United States to provide housing and support to homeless Trans + Queer kinfolk and sex workers.
