What is Cultured Kinfolk?

Cultured Kinfolk is a cultural heritage lifestyle brand dedicated to amplifying conscious Black, Latinx, and POC culture, history, spirituality, and narratives, that have been historically ignored, through reflective products, content, events, and creative services. We operate as a online shop where we sell our products and are working on listing products of other mission aligned kinfolk.

We believe in the healing power of culture, community, and standing in your truth. We believe that as a community we have everything we need to foster a healthy, conscious, spiritual, and abundant life.  We believe that money is infinite so we embedded a impact marketplace model into our business so we can continuously flow money into our community.

Cultured Kinfolk was founded by Janet Luz Sackey a New York born, Black, Queer, AfroDominican+Ghanaian American social entrepreneur, healer, artist, and cultural worker dedicated to educating and empowering her community with BILPOC history, entrepreneurship, and global healing modalities.

Janet Luz Sackey is a fourth generation entrepreneur on both sides. Her great grand father Cornelius Sakyi founded the trade city Suhum, Ghana in the beginning of the 20th century. Her grand mother Iris Phipps-Solano was the owner of two Dominican restaurants in The Bronx, NYC. Her father Cornelius Stephen Sackey has been a business consultant for the past 30 years in New York City aiding many entrepreneurs of color build brick and mortar businesses. Her mother Luz M Phipps is a behavioral therapist and real estate investor in Pennsylvania.

Her Reason Why:

"I was inspired to create Cultured Kinfolk because I grow up with a colonized mentality, relaxing my hair, worshipping woman who didn't look like my family, playing into the toxic colonialisms, and unconscious of the role my ancestors played in history. As I began to uncover the dehumanizing societal veils from before my eyes, I realized that general media, society, and fashion didn't affirm the legacy of my ancestors, my culture, and lifestyle as a first generation African + Afro Latina woman. I used to think, "My people been here, where are they in design, products, and art?." That question serves as the WHY of Cultured Kinfolk. I create products, experiences, and content I want to see. I create from a place of reverence for "the culture" giving thanks to my ancestors, art, and ideas that aiding in the creation of me, you, and everything we love from music, art, poetry, food, to identity."
